In this artwork, I express my deepest feeling of unconditional love for my son, who stands at the delicate threshold between childhood and adulthood. The journey through his teenage years has revealed truths about myself that I had never realized. He unknowingly brought out my inner self, confronting me with my unconscious fears, attachments, and the need for control over life. This awakening came during a brief but intense separation when, driven by conflict, he left home before turning 18. Those three days of not knowing where he was or what he felt unearthed the boundlessness of my love for him—an unbreakable, unchanging bond.
The snail in this piece represents a cherished symbol of his childhood. For years, after every bath, we’d wrap him in a towel, transforming him into "La Oruguita" (the little caterpillar), which somehow turned into "Ulitka," or "snail" in Russian. It became a loving ritual and a character that stayed with us, until he became an older brother at nine. This artwork’s second title, Bring Me Back the Snail, reflects his struggle with releasing the “shell” that has shielded him from the world—the comfort of my love and care. This shell was taken from him too early, leaving him feeling unprepared and vulnerable. The resulting feeling of abandonment and lack of understanding became a source of tension, building into a difficult period between us.
This year, our relationship reached a breaking point. Without that intense conflict, I believe we might have drifted away, losing each other on a spiritual level forever. In that week apart, we both went through a kind of soul-cleansing, and when we finally embraced again, it wasn’t just a physical hug. It was a reunion of our spirits. Tears came unbidden, filled with mutual forgiveness and a declaration of pure, unconditional love. That evening, I went home and sketched what I felt—our bond, our journey, and our connection.
This artwork is deeply personal, yet joyous. Though darker colors edge the background to represent our past struggles, the center emerges into light, symbolizing the purest love there is—a mother and son’s love. After that painful fracture, we emerged together, starting fresh from a blank slate, creating a new relationship based on acceptance, mutual respect, support, and a deep appreciation for each moment together. We now know each other as two independent souls, free from judgment or expectations, bonded by an unwavering love and understanding that will last forever.
